Aphorisms for Artists by Walter Darby Bannard

Aphorism #22

Fun is profound.

I heard a colleague try to explain the joy of art to a student, but the student, convinced that art must be sober and unfrivolous, objected. “That’s not profound, that’s just fun.”

My colleague responded, “Fun is profound.”

This stuck with me, and I wondered why until I realized the obvious: Art is fun. Art gives pleasure, and pleasure delivers art. They are inseparable.

Previous: There is no sweat equity in art.

Next: Keep your ego out of your art.
