Aphorisms for Artists by Walter Darby Bannard

Aphorism #37

Innovations in art are catalysts, not conclusions.

True innovation in art is not making something new and different but making something better.

Novelty rejects true innovation in favor of obvious but superficial changes calculated to get attention. True innovation is thoroughly absorbed into the object and cannot be considered apart from the elements of the object.

There is only one measure for any innovation: does it make the art better?

Previous: Writing about art is only useful to art when it leads into the experience of art.

Next: Art is here to take us beyond language.
