Aphorisms for Artists by Walter Darby Bannard

Aphorism #63

When inspiration dies, imitation thrives.

In academia it is said that to steal from one person is plagiarism, but to steal from many is research.

In the art business, when one steals it is influence, when many do it’s a trend, and when it goes over big it’s fashion.

Imitation, like so many things, becomes reputable as it becomes conventional.

Previous: Planning is fine. Preparing is better.

Next: When anything can be art, art is not much of anything.
