Aphorisms for Artists by Walter Darby Bannard

Aphorism #14

A critic without an eye is a eunuch in a harem.

The ability to see underlies all criticism. It seems to be an inborn talent which can grow and improve with use. It is not only essential, it is rare (especially in the art world, alas) and clearly evident when expressed.

I once went around a large art collection with a prominent politician who had no art background at all. I expected it to be a chore, but he amazed me by not only picking the best work but also by saying smart things about it. He knew nothing about art, but he had an eye and he had the confidence to say what he thought.

Too bad he wasn’t in the art business!

Previous: When art writing seems incomprehensible, chances are it is.

Next: Ugliness in art is the last refuge of the uninspired.
