Aphorisms for Artists by Walter Darby Bannard

Aphorism #75

An argument about art is not won until it helps someone see.

Like so much else, art is argued over endlessly and fruitlessly.

Much of the talk is not about art as such, but things peripheral to art. If the discussion is about specific good art, and you can somehow trigger a better comprehension of that art in someone, then some actual work gets done.

In such a disagreement the loser is the winner.

Previous: If you like everything, you like nothing.

Next: In art, as in life, the best way to remedy mistakes is to take advantage of them.
