Aphorisms for Artists by Walter Darby Bannard

Aphorism #54

Art captures life.

I have always felt that the much-discussed structure of Cézanne’s paintings and the Cubist pictures that came out of them, which are so full of staccato Impressionist marks, is really just a visible foundation for the living vibration that the structure supports.

It seems to me that all the various elements of any good art are in the service of capturing something perpetually unresolved, like a furious bee in a bottle. Like life itself.

Previous: The power of art is not communication, but effect.
