Aphorisms for Artists by Walter Darby Bannard

Aphorism #55

Paint, don’t think.

This is what I say when I see a student sitting passively in front of unfinished work. Painting is action: paint, look, paint again, look again. If you are not in the thick of it, go have lunch.

A former graduate student recently thanked me for this, telling me that his studio time had been polluted with racing thoughts of the art world and what other people think and other such useless ephemera. Now he just leaves it all at the door, thinks about nothing, and paints.

Previous: Art captures life.

Next: You can see it but you can’t say it.
